Hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. The condition could also refer to overactive thyroid which results in the production of more thyroid hormone.

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland at the front of your neck which produces thyroid hormones like T3 and T4. These hormones help:

1) Your body to use energy.
2) Balancing the temperature of your body.
3) Proper functioning of the heart, brain, and other organs.

Hyperthyroidism could easily mislead you with other health conditions as it has some common symptoms that includes:

In this article I am going to discuss how diet affects hyperthyroidism and also provide a list of foods that should be eaten and be avoided by a hyperthyroidism patient.

Exactly speaking there is no food that is specifically designed to deal with the condition like hyperthyroidism, although a healthy and balanced diet helps to add a world of good. 

A balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, healthy grains, and lean protein are the important sources that could get you enough nutrients to keep you healthy. 

Nutrients and chemicals mentioned in the below list plays a very crucial part in hyperthyroidism:

1) Iodine is used by the thyroid gland for producing thyroid hormone. And having an excessive quantity could lead to an increase in the production of thyroid hormone.

1) Low–iodine foods: As mentioned above that iodine plays a significant role in producing thyroid hormone hence a low-iodine diet helps in reducing thyroid hormones.

a) Non-iodized salt.
b) Tea or coffee but without milk.
c) Egg whites.
d) Oats.
e) Potatoes.

2) Cruciferous vegetables: Some cruciferous vegetables contain compound that may reduce your thyroid gland from producing thyroid and may also moderate iodine intake by the thyroid. 

However, someone with hypothyroidism should avoid eating large amount of these vegetable mentioned below:

a) Cauliflower.
b) Broccoli.
c) Brussels sprouts
d) Radish.
e) Cabbage.

3) Foods containing iron: Iron is very vital for thyroid health it carries oxygen that is needed for blood cells to every cells in your body. 

Deficiency in iron may lead to C. Food that are good source of iron are: 

a) Green leafy vegetables.

c)Dried beans like white beans, kidney beans, and black beans.
d) Dark chocolates.
e) Lentils.

4) Selenium: Selenium rich food helps in increasing the metabolism of the thyroid hormones and prevents in cell damage and keeps your thyroid and other tissues healthy.

Well, not many foods are good sources of Vitamin D but the primary source of it is the sunlight.

a)  Fortified orange juice.
b) Fortified cereals.
c) Mushrooms.

Foods to avoid in hyperthyroidism

There are certain foods that should be avoided by a person with hyperthyroidism. 

Below there is a list of food, eating of which can lead to worsening effects incase of hyperthyroidism:

1) Iron-rich foods: Intake of too much iron-rich food leads the thyroid to produce too much thyroid hormone resulting in hyperthyroidism. Iron-rich foods that should be avoided are:

b) Iodine supplements.
c) Lobster.
d)  Fish and shellfish.
e) Dairy products.

2) Soy: According to researches, soy ingestion can interfere with some treatments for hyperthyroidism when radioactive iodine treatment is taken up for the above. Sources of so include:

a) Soy sauce.
b) Soybean oil.
c) Tofu.
d) Soy milk.
e) Edamame beans.

3) Caffeine: Caffeine can exacerbate the symptoms of hyperthyroidism and could increase anxiety, nervousness, irritability and rapid heart rate. 

Foods and drinks that have caffeine should be avoided are :

4) Gluten: Gluten may be harmful as it causes inflammation and results in damage to the small intestine due to ingestion of gluten.

c) Oats.
d) Rye.
e) Fried foods.

5) Nitrates: Having too much of iodine in your diet can create a harmful impact as it causes the thyroid gland to absorb excessive iodine and as a matter of fact leads to an enlarged thyroid and hyperthyroidism. 

Some  of the foods that contain nitrates to be avoided or limited are:

Hyperthyroidism is a condition wherein the thyroid becomes overactive and tends to produce excessive thyroid hormone.
